Career Trajectory

Ratmansky trained at the Vaganova Academy and danced professionally in Russia before transitioning to choreography in the 1990s, initially creating works for the Bolshoi Ballet's experimental programs. His appointment as resident choreographer at American Ballet Theatre in 2009 catalyzed an extraordinary creative period, during which he established himself as the defining ballet choreographer of his era through formally adventurous, emotionally penetrating works that expanded the vocabulary of classical dance.
