Conductor
Patrick Summers is an American conductor and pianist of commanding versatility, distinguished by his deep expertise in opera and his transformative leadership of Houston Grand Opera.
Defining moments and milestones
From his debut conducting *La bohème* at San Francisco Opera's Western Opera Theater in 1986–87, Patrick Summers ascended through the ranks of American opera with methodical artistry and intellectual rigor, mentored by the incomparable Charles Mackerras and shaped by his dual training as pianist and vocal coach. His tenure at San Francisco Opera, where he became a mainstage fixture and eventually the company's Music Director, established him as a champion of contemporary opera and a master of the classical canon alike. As Music Director of Houston Grand Opera since the early 2000s, Summers has transformed the company into a major American opera force, founding its resident orchestra, mounting the first complete *Ring Cycle* in company history, and bringing landmark American works to the stage with scholarly precision and theatrical imagination.
