Director
Werther as Director · Opera Bastille · Feb 8, 2027
After abandoning formal actor training at York University, Carsen completed a rigorous two-year program at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where a mentor recognized his directorial potential. He spent nine formative years as an assistant director at Europe's leading opera houses before making his professional directorial debut with Boito's Mefistofele at Geneva Opera in 1988. His 1991 production of Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream at Aix-en-Provence—a staging of psychological depth and visual sophistication—established his international reputation and opened the doors to the world's great opera houses, where he has since become celebrated for productions that excavate the human drama within canonical works.
