Rupert Goold established himself as a director of exceptional formal intelligence in the early 2000s, first gaining prominence through productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Almeida Theatre. His breakthrough came with *Enron* (2009), a visceral examination of corporate malfeasance that transferred to the West End and won the Olivier Award for Best New Play, establishing him as a major theatrical voice. Since assuming the artistic directorship of the Almeida Theatre, Goold has become known for productions of startling visual and conceptual ambition—from his stark, psychologically penetrating *Macbeth* to his audacious contemporary adaptation *King Charles III*—all of which have demonstrated his gift for making theatre that is simultaneously intellectually rigorous and theatrically thrilling.
