Emerging from Brussels's avant-garde dance scene in the late 1990s, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui rapidly established himself as a choreographer of rare imaginative range, creating works that dissolve boundaries between contemporary dance, classical ballet, opera, and theatre. His 2008 collaboration *Sutra* with sculptor Antony Gormley and the Shaolin monks became an international touchstone, exemplifying his gift for synthesizing disparate cultural vocabularies into spiritually searching investigations of the human form.
