Beginning as a child actor in BBC television before transitioning to directing on the London fringe with his company Stray Dogs Theatre, Godwin built his reputation through associate directorships at the Royal and Derngate Theatres in Northampton, where he developed a distinctive approach to classical and contemporary drama. His breakthrough came with acclaimed productions at the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, where his psychologically acute interpretations of Shakespeare and modern classics earned him recognition as one of Britain's most intellectually commanding stage directors. Now leading the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., Godwin continues to define his era through productions that marry textual fidelity with innovative staging.
