Director
After training in the rigorous physical vocabulary of Jacques Lecoq's Paris studio, McBurney co-founded Complicité in 1983, establishing himself as a director of rare sensitivity to the actor's body and the audience's emotional intelligence. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he created a succession of landmark productions—*Street of Crocodiles*, *Mnemonic*, *A Disappearing Number*—that redefined what contemporary theatre could achieve through ensemble precision and poetic invention. His expansion into opera and his creation of *The Encounter*, a binaural masterpiece of solo performance, cemented his status as one of Europe's most consequential living theatre artists.
