Simon Stone emerged from Melbourne's independent theatre scene in 2007 with *Spring Awakening*, an adaptation that announced his distinctive directorial voice: psychologically acute, visually austere, and fiercely committed to textual excavation. Over the next decade, he built an international reputation through touring productions of Ibsen and Lorca that demonstrated an almost anthropological precision in revealing the emotional machinery of canonical drama, culminating in the Olivier Award–winning *Yerma* (2016).
