Guillem rose from the Paris Opéra Ballet's ranks to become principal dancer by her early twenties, commanding the classical canon with technical brilliance and dramatic intensity. Her 1989 move to the Royal Ballet marked a decisive turn toward artistic risk-taking, as she pursued collaborations with cutting-edge choreographers and expanded her repertoire into demanding contemporary work. Over four decades, she established herself as one of ballet's most intellectually engaged and fearless interpreters, equally at home in Swan Lake and in the challenging, boundary-pushing creations of Forsythe and Preljocaj.
