
Blanchard emerged from New Orleans in the 1980s as a virtuosic post-bop trumpeter, establishing himself through decades of acclaimed recordings and performances with his own ensembles and as a sideman in the jazz mainstream. Beginning in the 2000s, he expanded into orchestral composition and operatic work, eventually creating original operas including *Champion*, which premiered at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and was subsequently produced at the Metropolitan Opera. His multifaceted practice—spanning jazz bandleader, classical composer, conductor, and orchestrator—has positioned him as a singular figure bridging jazz and classical traditions.
