Director
Ostermeier emerged from Berlin's experimental theatre scene in the mid-1990s, quickly establishing himself as a director of intellectual precision and formal innovation at the Deutsches Theater's Baracke before joining the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in 2002, where his canonical reinterpretations—particularly of Ibsen and Shakespeare—have become touchstones of European theatre. His work combines meticulous textual scholarship with visceral, politically conscious staging, earning international recognition including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and positioning him as artistic director of the Schaubühne since 2009, a role he has sustained while maintaining an unrelenting schedule of guest productions across Europe's major institutions.
