After studying medieval history at Columbia and earning an M.F.A. in directing from NYU Tisch, Kushner spent the early 1980s directing experimental works and classical theatre before his commercial breakthrough with *A Bright Room Called Day* at San Francisco's Eureka Theatre Company in 1987. The 1993 Broadway premiere of *Angels in America: Millennium Approaches*, followed by *Perestroika* in 1994, catapulted him to international prominence, establishing him as a playwright of uncompromising ambition who could synthesize personal tragedy, historical sweep, and formal innovation. Over three decades, he has expanded his reach across theatre, film, opera, and essay, becoming one of America's most celebrated and intellectually consequential dramatists.
Pulitzer Prize for Drama (1993) for *Angels in America: Millennium Approaches*; Tony Award for Best Play (1993) for *Angels in America: Millennium Approaches* and (1994) for *Angels in America: Perestroika*
