Trevor Nunn's directorial career began in earnest at the Belgrade Theatre before ascending to the Royal Shakespeare Company, where his eighteen-year tenure (1968–1986) established him as a master of classical drama with an innovative visual sensibility. His transition to musical theatre proved equally transformative: Nicholas Nickleby (1980) and Cats (1981) demonstrated his capacity to command large-scale commercial productions without sacrificing artistic integrity, making him one of the few directors equally at home with Shakespeare and Andrew Lloyd Webber. His subsequent work across opera, film, and theatre has cemented his status as a director of rare versatility and enduring influence.
