McGregor's trajectory from the experimental fringes of British contemporary dance to the establishment heights of the Royal Ballet represents one of the most significant artistic migrations in recent dance history. Beginning with the founding of Random Dance in 1992, he developed a movement language that synthesized classical ballet technique with the spatial and rhythmic innovations of contemporary practice, creating work of intellectual rigor and visceral power. His appointment as the Royal Ballet's resident choreographer in 2006 marked a turning point not only for his career but for the institution itself, as his radical aesthetic gradually transformed the company's artistic identity and expanded its creative possibilities.
Knighted by His Majesty King Charles III in the 2024 Birthday Honours for Services to Dance; appointed first Resident Choreographer of the Royal Ballet from a contemporary dance background (2006–2019)
