Choreographer
Forsythe began as a virtuosic dancer with Joffrey Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet before transitioning to choreography in the early 1980s, where he immediately distinguished himself with intellectually rigorous, deconstructive works that interrogated classical ballet's fundamental assumptions. His two decades leading Frankfurt Ballet established him as the most influential choreographer of his generation, creating a body of work—*In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated*, *Artifact*, *The Second Detail*—that permanently altered ballet's aesthetic and technical vocabulary. Since 2005, through Forsythe Company and ongoing commissions with major institutions, he has remained at the forefront of contemporary dance innovation, his influence extending far beyond ballet into the broader landscape of movement-based performance.
