Established in 1973, the Adelaide Festival Centre is the architectural and cultural heart of South Australia's performing arts scene, distinguished by its bold structuralist design with iconic white geometric dome roofs. As Australia's first capital city multi-purpose arts centre, it serves as the primary venue for the internationally acclaimed Adelaide Festival—ranked alongside Edinburgh and Avignon among the world's premier arts festivals—and is home to the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, State Opera of South Australia, and The Australian Ballet. The complex underwent an ambitious transformation in recent years, reopening with revitalised theatres, new seating, upgraded sound and lighting systems, and refreshed foyers.
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The Festival Theatre and Dunstan Playhouse offer good acoustics throughout, while the Adelaide Town Hall Auditorium—also used during the festival—is praised for its classic shoebox design, which provides beautiful sound quality and intimate audience connection.
In the Festival Theatre, Row J in the Stalls offers excellent sound quality and balance with optimal proximity to performers; middle Stalls or front Dress Circle rows are also highly regarded. The Adelaide Town Hall Auditorium's Gallery seats M15 and M16 provide superb acoustics for orchestral performances.
