Altria Theater

The Altria Theater stands as one of Richmond's most architecturally distinctive performing arts venues, a 1927 Moorish Revival masterpiece originally built as The Mosque for the Acca Temple Shriners. Designed by Marcellus Wright Sr. with Charles M. Robinson and Charles Custer Robinson, the building captivates with its minaret-like exterior and Saracenic arches, while its interior dazzles with Italian, Spanish, and Tunisian marble, ornamental tilework, and 75,000 square feet of gold leaf adorning the central dome. After the City of Richmond acquired the building in 1940, it underwent transformative renovations in 1994–95 and again in 2014, emerging as a premier destination for Broadway touring productions, concerts, and comedy.
