Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook in the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, Dance Theatre of Harlem shattered racial barriers in classical ballet and redefined what a ballet company could be. Based in New York City, the company blends neoclassical technique with a distinctly American vitality, performing works that honor ballet tradition while embracing diverse cultural influences. Its school and outreach programs have launched generations of dancers, making it one of the most consequential institutions in American dance.
