A jewel of neo-Renaissance architecture on Budapest's Andrássy Avenue, the Hungarian State Opera House opened in 1884 to designs by Miklós Ybl. Its lavish interior — frescoed ceilings, gilded boxes, a three-ton bronze chandelier — rivals the great opera palaces of Vienna and Paris. The company has nurtured a distinguished tradition of Hungarian-language opera while maintaining the international repertoire at the highest standard. A meticulous multi-year restoration completed in 2022 returned the building to its original splendor.
