Opera Philadelphia has reinvented itself as one of the most forward-thinking opera companies in America, earning widespread recognition for its Festival O — an annual multi-venue celebration that stages new and classic works in unconventional spaces across the city. Performing at the Academy of Music, a gilded nineteenth-century jewel and the oldest opera house in the United States still used for its original purpose, the company pairs that grand setting with site-specific and immersive productions that challenge every convention of how opera is experienced. It is a model for the art form's future.
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The Academy of Music features renowned 19th-century acoustics often described as near-perfect, though orchestral sound can be problematic in certain areas. The ceiling was deliberately designed to avoid echo reflections.
Orchestra level sections D, E, and F in front rows offer ideal proximity with clear sightlines. Mezzanine provides excellent perspective for appreciating full stage scope. Center balcony offers panoramic views at more affordable prices. Avoid seats with column obstructions.
