Founded in 1963 by Barbara Weisberger with guidance from George Balanchine, Pennsylvania Ballet was for decades Philadelphia's preeminent classical dance company. The company built a distinguished repertoire spanning Balanchine neoclassicism, full-length story ballets, and contemporary works. In 2021, Pennsylvania Ballet merged with the smaller Philadelphia Dance Company to form Philadelphia Ballet, uniting two of the city's most important dance institutions under a single banner. The legacy of Pennsylvania Ballet lives on through the combined company's continued commitment to the classical tradition and artistic excellence.
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The Academy of Music is widely praised for excellent acoustics, particularly for ballet and opera, though some post-1980s renovations introduced acoustic changes. For dance performances, the venue maintains its reputation as one of the finest in the United States.
For ballet, the first rows of sections D, E, and F in the Parquet Circle offer an ideal balance of proximity and sightlines. The center balcony provides the best perspective for appreciating full choreography and sets. Avoid front-row orchestra seats (which can obscure footwork) and seats near original columns that may obstruct views.
