Sweden's national opera company performs in a magnificent nineteenth-century opera house overlooking the waters of central Stockholm, a building that has served as the country's premier lyric stage since 1898. The Royal Swedish Opera presents a season of grand opera, chamber opera, and ballet, drawing both international guest artists and Sweden's finest home-grown singers. The company has been particularly celebrated for its Wagner productions and its championship of Scandinavian operatic works. The Royal Swedish Opera embodies the deep musical culture that has made Sweden a disproportionately significant force in classical vocal arts.
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The horseshoe-shaped auditorium provides excellent acoustics and sightlines with an intimate atmosphere. However, some productions employ discreet sound amplification systems that blend with acoustic sound, which some traditionalists view as compromising the venue's natural acoustic character.
Center stalls offer optimal sightlines and acoustic balance. The Grand Tier (first balcony) provides excellent views. Avoid extreme side seats which may have limited stage visibility. Book well in advance for popular ballet and opera performances.
