The Shanghai Grand Theatre is one of China's most important performing arts venues, a modernist glass structure on People's Square designed by the French architect Jean-Marie Charpentier and opened in 1998. Its three performance spaces host a season of international opera, ballet, musicals, and symphonic concerts that reflects Shanghai's cosmopolitan character and its ambition to rank among the world's great cultural cities.
