Tips from the regulars
Entrance
Coat check: yesThe primary public entrance is via the broad ceremonial steps on the eastern side, accessible from Circular Quay. For those arriving by car or taxi, the western forecourt provides vehicle drop-off. Wheelchair users and those with mobility constraints should use the accessible entrance on the western side, which connects directly to lift access.
Intermission
The Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre both have dedicated bar areas that become crowded during intermission. Arrive early or plan to stand; the Drama Theatre has more spacious foyer circulation. Water and light refreshments are available throughout the building. The harbour-facing terraces offer respite from indoor crowds on fine evenings.
Accessibility
The venue is fully wheelchair accessible with lifts serving all performance spaces. Accessible seating is available in all theatres; book directly through the box office or via the website. Hearing loops are installed throughout, and audio description and surtitles are available for most productions. Contact accessibility services at the box office for specific requirements.
Transit, parking & directions
Public Transit
Circular Quay Station (Sydney Trains lines T1–T9) is the primary transit hub, a 5-minute walk from the main entrance. The station serves the entire metropolitan rail network. Ferry services also operate from Circular Quay, offering an alternative arrival experience with views of the Opera House from the water.
Parking
On-site parking is limited. The nearest major car park is the Circular Quay Car Park (approximately 5–10 minutes' walk), which typically charges AUD 15–20 for up to 4 hours. Street parking in the surrounding area is metered and competitive. Ride-share drop-off is available on the western forecourt.
