The oldest continuously active opera house in the world, the Teatro di San Carlo opened in 1737 under the Bourbon king Charles III, predating La Scala by over four decades. Its magnificent horseshoe auditorium, rebuilt after an 1816 fire, remains one of the most acoustically revered spaces in Italian opera. Donizetti, Rossini, and Verdi all composed works specifically for this stage, embedding San Carlo into the DNA of the operatic canon. Restored to full splendor in 2010, the theater continues to present seasons of extraordinary ambition befitting its singular history.
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
Widely praised for exceptionally superb acoustics, with characteristics comparable to La Scala in Milan. Modern renovations, including the 2009 interior restoration and the 1872 orchestra pit addition, have preserved and enhanced its acoustic qualities.
Palchi II (second tier boxes) are generally considered the best seats. Avoid seats too close to the sides in boxes, which may have obstructed views or suboptimal sound quality.
