A German Requiem

Rather than following the Latin Requiem Mass, Brahms selected his own texts from the Lutheran Bible to create a requiem for the living, offering comfort to those who mourn. Composed partly in memory of his mother and his mentor Robert Schumann, the work moves through seven movements from grief to consolation, culminating in the promise that 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.' One of the supreme achievements of the choral repertoire.
