In 1950s Salford, spirited teenager Jo is left to fend for herself when her boisterous, self-absorbed mother Helen runs off with a younger man. Finding companionship with Jimmy, a Black sailor, Jo is soon pregnant and alone again. Her friend Geoffrey, a gentle gay art student, moves in to care for her, but Helen's inevitable return threatens their fragile domestic happiness. Shelagh Delaney's groundbreaking kitchen-sink drama challenged the conventions of British theatre with its frank portrayal of race, class, sexuality, and motherhood.
