Set in ancient Egypt during the reign of the Pharaohs, Aida tells the tragic story of forbidden love between an Egyptian military commander and an enslaved Ethiopian princess. Radamès, a celebrated warrior, falls deeply in love with Aida, an Ethiopian slave in the household of Amneris, the Pharaoh's daughter who harbors her own passionate feelings for him. When war erupts between Egypt and Ethiopia, Radamès is appointed supreme commander of the Egyptian forces. Torn between his love for Aida and his duty to Egypt, he leads the army to victory—only to discover that Aida's father, the Ethiopian king Amonasro, has been captured. Caught in a web of conflicting loyalties, Radamès inadvertently betrays military secrets to Amonasro while trying to protect Aida. Discovered and condemned as a traitor, Radamès faces execution by entombment. Aida, learning of his fate, steals into the sealed tomb to join him in death, choosing love and eternal union over a life of separation and sorrow.
