On a starlit night, the Three Kings stop at the humble home of Amahl, a disabled shepherd boy, and his impoverished mother on their way to bring gifts to the Christ child. When Amahl's mother attempts to steal some of the Kings' gold, Amahl offers his crutch as his own gift, and is miraculously healed. Gian Carlo Menotti's touching one-act opera, the first opera commissioned for American television, has become a beloved holiday tradition.
