La Bayadère unfolds in ancient India, where the temple dancer Nikiya and the warrior Solor share a passionate, forbidden love. When the rajah's daughter Gamzatti discovers their affair, she manipulates events to eliminate her rival. Nikiya is bitten by a venomous snake and dies, her spirit ascending to the celestial Kingdom of the Shades. In a transcendent vision, Solor encounters Nikiya's phantom in an ethereal realm where the corps de ballet materializes as celestial beings. The lovers are briefly reunited in death, only for Solor to be claimed by divine forces as the temple crumbles around them. This masterwork of classical ballet combines exotic spectacle with profound emotional depth, exploring themes of love, duty, and the supernatural through Petipa's architectural choreography and Minkus's sumptuous score.
