King Arthur creates a utopian kingdom built on justice rather than might, founding the Round Table and marrying the beautiful Guenevere. But when the dashing knight Lancelot arrives at court and he and Guenevere fall hopelessly in love, their affair threatens to destroy everything Arthur has built. Lerner and Loewe's bittersweet musical retells the Arthurian legend as a story of idealism betrayed by human passion, ending not in despair but in the hope that the dream of Camelot will endure.
