Synopsis
The deep bond between David and Jonathan is tested as David rises to prominence and King Saul, Jonathan's father, grows increasingly paranoid and murderous. Torn between filial loyalty and his love for David, Jonathan faces an impossible choice as war with the Philistines approaches. Charpentier's Baroque opera, originally performed as interludes between the acts of a Latin tragedy, is a moving exploration of friendship, duty, and sacrifice.
