Synopsis
The Trojan hero Aeneas arrives in Carthage and falls in love with Queen Dido, but the gods and a malevolent Sorceress conspire to drive him away to fulfill his destiny of founding Rome. When Aeneas sails away, the heartbroken Dido sings her famous lament and dies of grief. Purcell's compact masterpiece compresses epic tragedy into intimate human emotion.
