From birth to death, the opera follows Oedipus as he unknowingly fulfills the prophecy that he will kill his father and marry his mother. Fleeing Corinth to escape fate, he defeats the Sphinx, becomes King of Thebes, and discovers the horrifying truth of his identity. Enescu's monumental opera, decades in the making, combines Romanian folk elements with a vast orchestral palette to create one of the 20th century's greatest and most rarely performed operatic achievements.
