In ancient Lesbos, the young goatherd Daphnis and shepherdess Chloé grow up together in innocent love, their affection deepening through shared pastoral life. When pirates raid their village and abduct Chloé, Daphnis collapses in despair, prompting the Nymphs to invoke Pan's aid. The god manifests in a terrifying vision that scatters the pirates and miraculously returns Chloé to safety. Reunited at dawn in the sacred grove, Daphnis and Chloé recount their harrowing experiences. The elderly shepherd Lammon reveals that Pan intervened in memory of his ancient love for the nymph Syrinx. The lovers enact this mythological tale through mime and dance, their movements celebrating both divine protection and the triumph of love. The ballet concludes in jubilant bacchanale as the community rejoices in the couple's reunion and Pan's benevolence.
