Leonore disguises herself as a young man named Fidelio and takes a job as a prison guard to rescue her husband Florestan, who has been secretly imprisoned by the tyrannical governor Don Pizarro. Working her way into the deepest dungeon, Leonore confronts Pizarro at knifepoint just as the Minister of Justice arrives to expose the injustice. Beethoven's only opera is a stirring hymn to conjugal love, human liberty, and the triumph of justice over tyranny.
