Samson et Dalila presents the biblical tragedy of a man undone by desire. The Israelite hero Samson leads his people in rebellion against their Philistine oppressors, his supernatural strength a gift from God. Yet when the seductive Dalila enters his life, she becomes an instrument of his enemies' vengeance. Torn between his divine calling and his passionate love for a woman he cannot trust, Samson surrenders to temptation. Dalila betrays him to the Philistine authorities, who blind and enslave him. In his final moment of redemption, as he is paraded before his captors in a temple of Dagon, Samson's strength miraculously returns. He brings down the temple's pillars, destroying his enemies and himself in a cataclysmic act of sacrifice that restores honor to his people and fulfills his covenant with God.
