The Marchioness Violante, believed dead after being stabbed by her jealous lover Count Belfiore, disguises herself as a gardener named Sandrina at the estate of the Podestà. When Belfiore arrives as a guest, a web of mistaken identities, jealousies, and romantic entanglements ensnares the entire household. Mozart's early comic opera, written at eighteen, already displays his genius for ensemble writing and psychological insight beneath the farcical surface.
