In pre-Revolutionary France, the aristocratic Marquise de Merteuil and the cynical Vicomte de Valmont engage in a dangerous game of seduction and manipulation. When Merteuil challenges Valmont to seduce the virtuous Madame de Tourvel, a pious widow, he accepts the wager with calculated precision. As Valmont pursues his conquest with letters and calculated encounters, genuine emotion threatens to undermine his libertine philosophy. Meanwhile, the innocent Cécile de Volanges becomes entangled in the machinations of both conspirators, her naïveté exploited for their mutual amusement.
