Iphigénie en Tauride follows the priestess Iphigenia, who was miraculously saved from sacrifice years earlier and now serves in a remote temple on the island of Tauris. When a storm brings two Greek strangers to shore, she discovers that one is her brother Orestes, tormented by the Furies for his matricide. The other stranger is Orestes' devoted friend Pylades. Iphigenia, bound by her sacred duty to sacrifice all foreigners to the goddess Diana, faces an agonizing conflict between familial love and religious obligation. As she prepares the ritual, the truth of their identities emerges, and divine intervention ultimately resolves the tragedy. The opera explores themes of redemption, familial bonds, and the triumph of humanity over blind duty, culminating in a joyous recognition and escape.
