
La Source unfolds as a fantastical romance set in the legendary Caucasus mountains and the opulent palace of the Khan of Ghendjib. The young hunter Djémil encounters the beautiful Circassian princess Nouredda, who is betrothed to the Khan. When she spurns his advances, the immortal water nymph Naïla—spirit of a magical spring who has fallen in love with Djémil—offers her supernatural aid. Using her enchantments, Naïla seduces the Khan himself, causing him to abandon his intended bride. Yet Nouredda remains indifferent to Djémil's affections. When Nouredda's brother Mozdock discovers the lovers and attempts to kill Djémil, Naïla intervenes with her magic to save him. In a climactic act of selfless devotion, the nymph sacrifices her immortality and her very life to revive the unconscious Nouredda, enabling Djémil and his beloved to unite at last. Her sacrifice restores the spring's flow, symbolizing renewal and redemption through love's transformative power.
