Washed-up Hollywood song-and-dance man Tony Hunter returns to Broadway, where his friends Lily and Lester Martin have written a new show for him. The pretentious director Jeffrey Cordova turns their lighthearted musical into an overwrought Faust adaptation, and Tony clashes with his co-star, the ballerina Gabrielle Gerard. After the show flops out of town, the cast takes charge, strips it back to pure entertainment, and creates a smash hit.
