Treemonisha

Set in a post-Civil War Black community in rural Arkansas, the educated young woman Treemonisha leads her people away from superstition and the conjurors who exploit their fears. After being kidnapped by the conjurors for threatening their power, she is rescued and forgives her captors. The community elects Treemonisha as their leader, and the opera ends with a jubilant celebration of education and enlightenment.
