Howard Reich, who spent decades as the Chicago Tribune's jazz critic, has adapted his 2019 book about his mother's survival in WWII Poland into an opera libretto. The composer is Tom Cipullo. Reich's move, from music criticism into libretto writing, from journalism into creative collaboration, is a reminder that the people who write about art sometimes have unfinished creative business of their own.
