Choreographer
Alexei Ratmansky is a Russian-Ukrainian-American choreographer whose restless musicality and contemporary sensibility have redefined classical ballet for the twenty-first century, creating works of intellectual rigor and visceral energy across the world's greatest companies.
Defining moments and milestones
Ratmansky emerged from the Soviet ballet system as a principal dancer with the Kyiv Ballet before transitioning to choreography in the 1990s, initially creating works for regional European companies. His appointment as artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet in 2004 established him as a major creative force, and his subsequent freelance career—marked by commissions from American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and the Royal Danish Ballet—has positioned him as the most influential choreographer of his generation, known for works that unite classical rigor with contemporary sensibility and psychological depth.
