Director
Barrie Kosky is an Australian-German theatre and opera director whose intellectually fearless, visually audacious productions have redefined contemporary opera staging across Europe and beyond.
Defining moments and milestones
Kosky's career arc traces from precocious school director to Berlin-based operatic visionary. After early work in Melbourne's experimental theatre scene, he relocated to Germany in the 1990s, where his appointment at Komische Oper Berlin catalyzed a creative partnership that produced the globally celebrated *Die Zauberflöte* (2005) and established him as an interpreter of uncommon theatrical intelligence. His subsequent invitations to Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House, and Bayreuth Festival—culminating in his historic 2017 *Die Meistersinger* and ongoing Ring Cycle—have positioned him as one of contemporary opera's most consequential directors.
First Jewish director and first non-Wagner family member to direct *Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg* at Bayreuth Festival (2017); recipient of the Bundesverdienstkreuz, Germany's highest civilian honor (2024)
Melbourne Grammar School; University of Melbourne (piano and music history, from 1985)
