The Wiener Staatsoper is one of the supreme opera houses on earth, a temple of lyric art where Mahler, Strauss, and Karajan once held court and where the world's greatest singers still converge nightly. Rebuilt after wartime destruction and reopened in 1955, the house on the Ringstrasse presents an astonishing repertoire of over fifty operas each season, performed nearly every evening in true stagione-repertory hybrid fashion. Its orchestra — drawn from the Vienna Philharmonic — provides a sound of unmatched warmth and sophistication. To stand in the Stehplatz or sit in the gilded auditorium is to experience opera at its most exalted.

Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The Vienna State Opera is widely regarded for its excellent acoustics, with consistently praised sound quality across the auditorium. The venue's design and restoration work have maintained its reputation as one of Europe's finest opera houses for musical performance.
Orchestra stalls in the center sections (rows G-M) offer optimal acoustics and sightlines. Mid-level boxes provide excellent perspectives, while extreme side balconies may have compromised acoustics and views.

Contact the relevant department directly to inquire about practice room access for visiting professional artists — arrangements vary by semester and department. The mdw's building complex also houses the Anton-von-Webern-Saal (concert hall) and numerous ensemble rehearsal rooms. The university is a 5-minute walk from the U3 Rochusgasse station.
The Wiener Konservatorium is more flexible than the mdw for visitors seeking practice access. Located in the heart of the 1st Bezirk, it is the most conveniently situated practice facility for performers working at the nearby Konzerthaus, Staatsoper, or Theater an der Wien.
