Villazón rose to international prominence in the 1990s and 2000s as one of the world's most sought-after lyric tenors, gracing the stages of the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, and Vienna State Opera with a voice of crystalline beauty and Romantic sensibility. His signature roles—Rodolfo in La Bohème, Alfredo in La Traviata, and the eponymous hero of Massenet's Werther—became benchmarks of lyrical perfection during his peak years. Following a vocal hiatus in the early 2010s, he reinvented himself as an opera director and cultural communicator, bringing his artistic vision and deep operatic knowledge to new audiences through direction, television, and public engagement.
Became artistic director of the Salzburg Mozartwoche festival.
