Glyndebourne is one of the world's most cherished opera festivals, set on a private country estate in the Sussex Downs where audiences have picnicked on the lawns during the long interval since 1934. Founded by John Christie and his soprano wife Audrey Mildmay, the festival combines artistic standards rivaling any international house with a uniquely civilized English atmosphere. The current theater, opened in 1994, seats around 1,200 and hosts productions of extraordinary musical and theatrical polish each summer.
Season
Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
Glyndebourne's opera house features excellent acoustics with warm, balanced sound throughout the auditorium, enhanced by recent renovations to the main theatre. The intimate 1200-seat venue ensures strong acoustic projection without amplification.
Stalls (orchestra level) in the centre sections offer optimal sightlines and acoustic balance. Avoid the extreme side boxes which have compromised views of the stage.
