The Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg is one of the most hallowed performing arts institutions in the world. Opened in 1860, its pale green neoclassical facade conceals an opulent auditorium where Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov premiered many of their greatest works. Home to the Mariinsky Ballet, opera company, and orchestra, the theater complex now includes the modern Mariinsky II stage, opened in 2013. Under the long tenure of Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky has maintained its position as Russia's preeminent house for opera, ballet, and orchestral music.

Acoustics, seating, and what to expect
The historic Mariinsky Theatre features legendary acoustics with an acoustically optimal horseshoe design where whispers from stage carry clearly to back rows. Mariinsky II (2013) also boasts excellent acoustics with advanced sound-dispersing features, though sound may be perceived as slightly more distant but remains clear and well-blended.
In the historic theatre, first rows of stalls boxes and dress circle offer excellent views; first balcony rows near the Tsar's Box are ideal for ballet. Avoid extreme side boxes and seats with obstructed sightlines from heads due to flat rake. Aisle seats recommended due to lengthy intermissions.
